The holiday season is full of joy, nostalgia, and; if you're in estate administration more than a few surprises. While most people associate Christmas with gifts, cookies, and carols, it's also a time when families stumble upon the most unexpected estate moments.

Here are a few Christmas-themed estate stories that offer both heartwarming lessons and gentle reminders about the importance of planning ahead.

The Santa Suit Clause
When Grandpa Joe passed away, his will was short but sweet. Among the usual directives was a handwritten note: "Give the Santa suit to the one who wears it best." Every year, he dressed up as Santa for the grandkids. After some laughter and a mini-Santa contest, the family decided to take turns donning the suit annually - keeping his tradition alive.

Presents from the Past
After her mother passed, Claire discovered a box labeled “Christmas 2025” in the attic, then another marked “Christmas 2026,” and so on. Her mom had pre-wrapped gifts for the next five years for each grandchild, complete with handwritten tags and inside jokes. Cue the happy tears.

The Fruitcake Forfeiture
Aunt Edna’s will included a clause: “Anyone who brings a fruitcake to Christmas dinner forfeits $1,000 of their inheritance.” What started as a joke turned into a hilarious family tradition complete with a “fruitcake watch” every December.

The holidays naturally bring up memories, traditions, and sometimes tough conversations. While estate planning isn’t exactly a jolly topic, it’s one of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones - clarity, comfort, and maybe even a few laughs. So, this season, between the carols and cocoa, consider having a light conversation about future wishes. You might be surprised how many meaningful stories (and a few fruitcake jokes) come out of it.
